Garden egg is a kind of eggplant popularly found in West Africa. It comes in two different shapes and colours; the green type which appears to be rounder and the white-yellowish type which appears oblong in shape. Garden Egg is a good source of dietary fibre, as well as other mineral and vitamins.

1. PROMOTES WEIGHT LOST: Eating of garden egg especially the greenish type is beneficial in weight reduction because they contain low carbohydrates and calories essential for weight management. It is popularly eating in Nigeria as a healthy meal with groundnut or peanut butter. Overweight individuals who want to lose weight or those who wish to retain their normal body weight can add garden egg to their diet as well. Also, it is commonly served in occasions by the Igbo tribe as a non-discriminating healthy meal. Abatcha, the popular Igbo food will not be complete without the addition of the green garden egg.


2. Rich in Antioxidants: Anthocyanins in eggplants are responsible in preventing the development of cancer as well as other diseases. Anthocyanins found in eggplants possess antioxidant properties that are responsible for protecting the whole body system.

Garden egg is a rich source of iron, which helps in increase in the red blood cell in the body, thereby aids in fighting against anaemia or deficiency in iron.


8. Prevents Diabetes: Garden eggs which are a source of soluble fibre and carbohydrates can help in the control and prevention of diabetes. Foods rich in fibre and carbohydrate help in the regulation of blood sugar levels and glucose absorption. It is an excellent food for people suffering from diabetes, as it will go a long way in the reduction and prevention of type 2 diabetes.


9. Maintain blood pressure levels: Garden eggs contain a high amount of calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. These minerals contained in it helps in maintaining electrolyte balance in our body. Therefore regular. consumption of garden egg helps in maintaining a good blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

It cleans the kidney: Garden egg leaves serves as detoxifiers to the kidney, it totally cleans the kidney and also prevents any unwanted material from entering it, and it's more effective when eaten raw or converted into juice by boiling for few seconds and then filtering the juice in a container; this juice can be taken 3 times per day or more. It is also called blood tonic.

11. Aid, eye health: Lutein and zeaxanthin contained in garden egg appears to play a role in eye health, and it may help prevent age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to vision loss in older people.


12. Prevents heart diseases: The fiber, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B-6, and antioxidants in garden egg all support heart health. Researchers also suggested that eating foods containing certain flavonoids, including anthocyanins, helps reduce inflammatory markers that increase the risk of heart diseases. Eating of garden egg daily will prevent the risk of heart diseases.
