Youth To Camp At Akosombo

The Suhum District AY leaders and Executives have proposed 2021 annual youth camp to be held in Akosombo in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

With the motive of reviving the Adventist youth in the district, the leaders plan to break the boredom surrounding the youth community in the church by bring this year's camp meeting to live by moving out of the district to host it in no place other than one of the best tourist geographical area in the country.

The executives of the AY, last Thursday presented a lively package full of activities and education to arouse the interest of the youth in the church.

The quoted fee for the camp is 150gh, which include feeding, accommodation and payment of some gate fees for some of the tourist site planned to be visited.

The suggested date for the camp is from Sunday, 19th December to Sunday 26th December, 2021.

1. Feel the roar of Akosombo Dam

Once at the hydroelectric dam, take a tour of the mighty installation while you enjoy the spectacular views this place offers. It is best to visit during the rainy season when the water levels are high. Remember, it can get scorching hot, so take a hat or umbrella for cover.

2. Set sail on the Dodi Princess

The only cruise ship in the entire country traverses Lake Volta and, despite the name, predates the famously doomed relationship between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed. Built at the Tema Shipyard in 1977 and originally intended to haul cargo, it was converted into a passenger ship in 1991. It has three decks, with the lower one air conditioned, a cocktail bar, an area for barbecuing and even a sick bay. On a good day out, expect photo-worthy views, barbecue lunches and live music on deck. Just 5 km from the shores of Lake Volta is the popular stop, Dodi Island.

3. Pamper yourself at The Royal Senchi Hotel

Offering two distinct restaurants and the gorgeously eclectic Palm Lounge Bar, the Royal Senchi is the place to experience the luxurious side of Akosombo. Located on a bend in the river, it includes a spa, opulent weekend buffets, and so much more. Explore the lake on a pedalo or have a picnic at the environmentally friendly park right next door.

4. Go fishing

The Volta River teems with succulent fish, most notably tilapia. At Aylos bay – and at many smaller, older places on the riverfront – there are jetty platforms available. Here, you can throw in a line and see what you catch, or simply enjoy lunch. As with most tropical rivers, the mosquitoes will emerge after 4 pm, so plan your day of lazing on the platform around this fact.

5. Put on those hiking boots

The forest surrounding the lake is gorgeous and teeming with wildlife. The Akwamu Gorge is known as an unparalleled bird-watching spot where, if you are lucky, you can spot the almost extinct Picathartes bird. You will be rewarded for the uphill climb with incredible views looking down on the snaking river.

6. Hop into a fisherman’s canoe

There’s nothing quite like trawling a large, wide lake in a traditional canoe – the feel of slicing through the water on such a delicate vessel, being one with the lake as the banana-shaped boat dips and sags, trailing your hands through the green water, observing fish and other life underneath all make for a wonderful experience. This is a relaxed way to see Lake Volta from the ground level and it’s also possible to stop at the numerous overgrown islands along the way. Bargaining with the many canoe owners is part of the fun.

7. Visit a traditional drum maker or kente weaver

Past the bridge and lining the road on the Asikuma junction are the traditional drum makers. You can take a drum workshop and learn how to make or play these instruments. The town also produces their own particular type of kente, appropriately called Ewe Kente.

8. Have fun at the Sajuna Beach Club

There is much fun to be had at this popular spot that features a man-made beach. It is a haven for those who love activities and boasts kayaks, beach volleyball, rowboats, soccer, basketball, two splash pools and a water slide.
